Filter Concatenation Effects in Optical Networks

The penalties associated with filter concatenation in the optical nodes of an optical network are experimentally assessed and the susceptibility of a transmission system to laser misalignment is investigated. The performance of a number of filter types are modelled. Thin film filters are suited to networks with large numbers of optical nodes while AWGs are more appropriate for high channel count networks. Measurements of the performance of a 10Gbit/s system incorporating cascade d multilayer interference filters are described. A penalty of approximately 1dB is measured for a cascade of 6 filters when the laser centre frequency is misaligned by 10GHz.
